The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) is tasked with a broad mandate surrounding social, humanitarian and human rights issues from around the world. To get a general idea of the committee, some issues discussed within SOCHUM include: human rights, global literacy, women’s rights, children’s rights, the treatment of refugees and displaced persons, international drug control, crime prevention, and the elimination of racism and discrimination.
Human rights are the very ethical basis that is todays modern world was built upon. On the 10th of December 1948, the United Nations announced the universal declaration of human rights. This declaration has been the base of many law systems worldwide and is the very core of what the United Nations stands for.Today the world faces some of the biggest humanitarian crises since the World War from the rise of neo-nazism to the ‘ethnical cleansing of Muslims ın Myanmar. In SOCHUM you will have the chance to debate about humanitarian problems that effect our world and come up with resolutions to these problems.
